My mother's group do a Secret Santa for Christmas - so we only have to buy one present come Christmas time. One of the mothers, Sam, drew Liam's name and she couldn't make it to Christmas dinner and we haven't been able to catch up since, so she left the present on my doorstep today.

IT'S A FLIPPIN' DRUM KIT.

Usually, the best presents come from mother's group because they are mums, they know what being a mum is like and they REMEMBER what being a mum is like. HOW IS GIVING A TWO YEAR OLD A DRUM KIT A GOOD IDEA.

HOW IS GIVING IT TO A TWO YEAR OLD WHO HAS A NEWBORN BABY BROTHER A GOOD IDEA.

WHAT THE FREAKING HELL.

And me, being the rookie that I am, let Liam open the present by himself, so he's seen it now, and he's happily banging away as I type.

PLEASE DEAR LIVEJOURNAL FRIENDS GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS AND STRATEGIES AS TO HOW I CAN MAKE THIS DRUM KIT SOMEHOW DISAPPEAR OR HOW I CAN CONVINCE LIAM TO ONLY DRUM WHILE TOBY IS AWAKE.

Oh my god.

I don't know, Tina, maybe push it down the stairs and make it look like an accident??? Honestly, I have known 2 year olds with drum kits but they didn't also have tiny babies in the house at the same time.

With Pipa's drum, we have "music time" and we bring down the box of obnoxious loud toys: duck call, drums, whistles, and recorders and let them go to town.
Then they all go back in the box and someone disappears them into the closet while the other parent distracts.

We actually relaxed that recently because she doesn't care about the drum too much anymore.

But there's a duck call hidden somewhere because sometimes it makes a grand re-entrance at very bad times.

[livejournal.com profile] mrsmdub's idea is a good one.

Further thoughts on a 'Music Time' - You could let him play with the drums, then introduce another toy instrument for him to play with, then put the loud toys away and let him listen to music. When Toby is big enough, he can join in on the parental directed music play.
