Maudlin.

Has anyone used the word 'maudlin' in real life? I keep seeing it everywhere and it's a beautiful word that captures a mood perfectly but I have never heard it being said, or in a film, or in the newspaper. Or even in novels. Just in fan fiction. Lots and lots of it.

Maybe it's not an Australian thing? I want to start using it! 'how are you feeling today, Tina?' 'oh, maudlin.'

I say it all the time, but I'm a) British and b) like to use unusual words pretty much for the sake of it.

Maybe it's an English thing then? I can't imagine anyone I hang around even knowing the word. Or maybe I'm the ignorant one and have just never been around anyone who has been maudlin.

Here I think it's pretty common to hear, 'that's a bit maudlin' - or maybe I just think it is because I used to be a goth, lol.

Maudlin was a favorite with my mom, and usually directed at me. Usually with an eye-roll. "*eye-roll, huff* oh stop being so maudlin."

I hear it vaguely frequently, but usually with a negative-ish connotation. Sort of a fancier way of saying emo?

I... have never in my life heard that word.

I use it semi-often, because my mom did so I didn't know it wasn't normal. But now that you mention it, I don't know if I've ever heard anyone else use it.

I would use it like, to describe a song or something. It is a good word.

I love that word too. I've used it a couple of times but it's definitely not part of my everyday speech.

I have seen it written a lot (though I don't think I've ever seen it in fanfic, or at least not much), but don't know if I've ever heard it spoken.

I feel like it's one of those writerly words you often read but rarely hear people say IRL. Like calling people "fool".
