I've never been a person who's wanted to see my fannish slashy subtext become canon. That's half the fun of subtext, being able to extrapolate what you want out of it.

And it's always kind of bothered me when people *really* want to see Merlin and Arthur have a romantic relationship on screen. Like I was still part of that old-school mindset - 'DO YOU ACTUALLY EXPECT THEM TO SHOW A GAY RELATIONSHIP ON A FAMILY TV SHOW'

Except I kept thinking about it, and legends (Arthur/Gwen) aside, if Merlin was a girl, they probably would be heading towards a relationship by now. Every show in the whole wide world with a male lead and a female lead does that, right? But he's not a girl, so we're back to the Gay On TV argument. Then I remembered Xena : Warrior Princess. Xena loved Gabrielle and vice versa and no one kicked up a stink there :( That's a family show - fantasy, action, comedy, drama, just like Merlin, and it was a very popular show and no one said anything about their relationship!

Not really sure where I'm going with this post, tbh.

Oh and I was also thinking about The Reveal and how it will happen and how I hope against hope that it'll be perfect. It'll have to be under duress, surely. Merlin will have no other choice. Unless they go the 'Arthur knew before Merlin told him' route, which would be interesting though they did that on Lois and Clark and though I really loved it when I was 13, not sure it would satisfy me now.

Any other TV shows that had to deal with a secret reveal? Never really watched Smallville.

Silly rambling post. Ugh.

I think it's actually more fun when they tease but don't actually go there. Like with Xena and Gabrielle - it was always hinted, never established, never denied. I only get upset when the writers/producers/actors/whatever start acting like the fans are crazy and they haven't a clue what we're picking up on, really.

If Merlin and Arthur ever had an onscreen kiss or something, I'd be excited for about a week before I got all "meh, fanfic is boring, what now?" Part of the fun for me is exploring all the places I know they won't go. What's the fun of fanfic if the show gets everything just right all the time?

After the last episode, I'm afraid they'll never have a reveal. I keep thinking maybe Merlin is disguised as old!Merlin in Morgana's vision of Camlann because he could never reveal his magic to Arthur. :(

It's always been strange to me how much people INVEST in TV/movie relationships. Especially gay relationships. And it'd be one thing if it were coming from gay people who were looking to have a little representation in the media, and I'm sure that happens as well, but from what I've seen, it's mostly straight women who get so ridiculous about the slash. Which is seriously confusing to me. I mean, I get having a fetish about watching two guys together, but it's not even really that. It seems like a lot of them really romanticize it and make it fluffy and OOC and something that they'd want from a man, not anything that two men would actually want from each other. And then they act like they're going to diiiiiiiiiiiiiiie (or that the networks are homophobic) if their fantasy doesn't come to fruition in the show. And it's scary how many of them lose themselves in it so much that they can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality anymore (Hello, Domlijah and Jared/Jensen shippers!) I just...what's missing in their lives that they have to take it to such extremes? It really weirds me out.
