So kids. Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series.

As far as I can tell it's wildly popular and it's a Young Adult series about a teenage girl falling in love with a vampire.

I can go two ways with this. I can either fall in love with it, because *hello* WHICH TEENAGE GIRL DID NOT WANT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH A VAMPIRE.

Or, I can hate every single pretentious word of it. Just the summary on wikipedia is making me feel a little nauseous.

Which will it be? Because if you think I'll like it, I'll order the first three books off Amazon.

I AM TRUSTING YOU HERE.

Someone pasted me a few sentences from it and I burst out laughing at the writing.

I've heard it's pretty bad (and the writing samples I saw confirmed that), but I know a lot of people who like it (adults even).

These (http://buttfacemakani.livejournal.com/280913.html) two (http://buttfacemakani.livejournal.com/281619.html) posts have passages from the book, with commentary.

I mean, Grace, we like ANNE RICE. How bad can it be?

I like pop songs! Is it like the book version of manufactured pop?

Unedited?

Oh, read the book then. XD

No, not unedited. I have not been able to stomach an unedited Anne Rice book.

The last Anne Rice book I read was in high school also, so that might say something too.

I don't mind her so much when someone edits her. And according to my cousin, she translates marvellously into French, which makes a lot of sense to me. At some point I think i'll probably have to read her in French.

LOL! I haven't read it, I don't know! I mean, yeah, I liked VC and I liked Harry Potter, and God knows, JKR is no great shakes when it comes to writing, but I'm not sure I could take bad writing PLUS teen romance with vampires and werewolves.

No harm in trying it out, though. Get it from the library? (Though if it's that popular, they may be all checked out.)

(Though I do maintain that the first VC books were better written. I could never make it through the later ones once she got rid of her editor and went crazy.)

I kind of like pretentious things sometimes... emo bands and the like.

Maybe if I keep that in mind? Do you still have the PDF?

It's impossible to be pretentious when the writing is that poor.

I'm reading it now. It's shit. You can have my copy of the first one if you like. 0449 705 655 if yr interested.

It's like a Mary Sue with extra wank. Me=v. unimpressed.

Yeah, but you're extremely harsh with books. My favourite book is At Swim, Two Boys and you can't stand it.

However, you hated Eragon, and I couldn't get past the first page, so we might be on to something.

Yeah I might get you to send it to me. I might like it the same way I like boybands.

I have a special hatred of books that drivel on, poetry, books about Ireland and books-with-gay-in-them, which pretty much covers all of At Swim, Two Boys. I can see it has literary value, much like other books I find intolerably dull like Middlesex and Pride and Prejudice (which is more than I can say for the shitcrapballpants of Jonathan Franzen) but I don't like it. I do still recommend it to people though who enjoy the above things which I despise.

Twilight I do not like and would not recommend, at least not to people who are familiar with fanfic. It reads like bad fanfiction and the Mary Sue would make anyone who has read bad Mary Sues want to weep. But, y'know. Some people dig that. It is by no means in the league of the absolutely and uniquely AWFUL, like Cecilia Dart-Thornton, unedited Anne Rice and Dean Koontz.

Boy bands are fun.

I've yet to finish Middlesex. I do like Pride and Prejudice, however, more than any other Austen book.

Yeah, not so big on the Mary Sue though.

I'm more of a Bronte kind of girl. I like my heroines dead and getting humped by bastardly orphan men with unresolved psychosis.

Well lemme know.

Hmm, I ended up loving the books even though I happily mocked them and rolled my eyes at parts.

The writing isn't brilliant and it has flaws, but I've read the first two books twice and am going to watch the film when it comes out. It has charm. :|

It is a book you want to hate. It is like badly done fanfic. However, she does draw you in and trap you.

I wanted to hate it and then read the first 2 novels in three days.

so yeah.
the books suck but it's fun to read them because they're just that bad. :D
it's sort of like a carcrash... you shouldn't watch but you can't stop?
the only halfway decent character is jacob black.
yeah.
dunno. i'd read them, but only if you don't have to pay for them. :D

I was told that there are vampire-related errors all over it, that Stephenie did no research of other vampire sources (books, theories, etc) and that she was proud of that. That kind of annoys me.

My friendslist is divided on the issue. Some love it, some hate it with a passion. I have no idea what to recommend, ahaha, sorry. Maybe if you could somehow borrow the first book before purchasing, just to see how bad it really is?

Vampire-related errors?
If you're writing your own "kind" of vampires, why should they be similar to those from other sources?
Unless of course you're writing a sequel to the Vampire Chronicles or some other "official" vampire canon. But that would get sued for copyright or plagiarism, I think?

I bought the first book and I've had it for months, and I haven't been able to get all the way through it. To me it reads: "Oh look at my pretty boyfriend. Isn't he pretty? He's so pretty! Plot? What plot? My BOYFRIEND IS PRETTY!"

It's so amateurish I'm kind of shocked that it's such a big hit. I kept waiting for something to happen...but the book is 90% "LOOK HOW PRETTY MY BOYFRIEND IS!" and about 10% of "plot" squeezed in at the end.

That said, bazillions of people are in love with it, so maybe your opinion will differ from mine. *shrug* I can't wait for the movie though.

If only it WERE pretentious. Instead, it's just purple and repetitive. Nevertheless, I've read all 3 books. It's like...a candy that's bad for you and sickening after a while, but you KNOW you'll eat it again.
