What do you mean they're self cleaning?!

So, one of my least favourite chores is cleaning out the oven. Apparently they make ovens that self clean. I've never ever ever come across this in my life.

Seriously between this, the dishwasher, the washing machine/dryer and a roomba, what else do you need to do?

Buy a Thermomix, obviously. (I hate those things)

We had one in our last house and the self-cleaning process stinks to high heaven but it's better than cleaning it yourself!

Every house/apartment I've lived in since the 90s has had one. It takes a while for it to work. Basically, you flip a switch that locks your oven door shut for a set period of time, and the cleaning setting runs the oven REALLY HOT. Like 800-900 fahrenheit. The lock is so you don't accidentally open it while it's so hot. It burns off all the gunk and sometimes leaves a fine layer of ash, but usually it's just all burnt away. You can't even use chemical cleaners on a self-cleaning oven, as it messes with the finish on the oven walls. I love them and can't imagine having to break out the spray cleaner again.

Really? I've never come across it. When my parents built their house, we decked out the kitchen in all sorts of stuff, but no self cleaning ovens!

Yeah, most of the mid to higher end models now have that feature. I looked at a lot of ovens when I was redoing my kitchen :) I've got one and so do my parents and we both did our kitchens within the past three years.

Apparently it is also very good for making excellent pizza bases because it gets so hot. I'm not sure that's a recommended use though....!

Do they not have self cleaning ovens in Australia? My oven is self-cleaning... I like it because after it's cool, you just wipe the charred stuff up with a paper towel and that's it. You don't have to scrub at all. But the annoying part is that the cleaning process heats your oven to like 500 degrees F, which stinks and makes your kitchen really hot and stinky. I don't run the self-cleaning cycle in the summer because of how hot it gets. I even have to move the butter dish from cupboard beside the stove when I run the self-cleaning cycle, because it melts the butter. It's a good thing to do in the winter though because you don't have to heat your house all day.

The fumes of a self-cleaner can be toxic for pets, especially birds. I have a foil oven liner which does the trick for me.

I've heard the term, but don't know anyone who has one. My oven is from like the 60s and is crap. I never clean it, though. I can't remember my mom ever cleaning it, either. XD

honestly I just stick a tray in the bottom and clean that + give the walls a little wipe ever fortnight/month/whenever I can be bothered. then again my oven never really gets too filthy.

We have a (broken) self cleaning oven, but I feel slightly wrong saying we live in Asia (though we do) - we live in Israel, and the oven is an American brand, installed in our house by our wealthy American landlords.

if you don't have a self-cleaning oven.. i don't, but know several people who do,,, then use oven cleaner. spray the whole thing, wait an hour or two and then wipe. Easy as cleaning mirrors (just a lot grosser)

I recently moved, and when I cleaned the oven, which hadn't been cleaned since we moved in three years prior, that is what I did and it came out sparkley, no scrubbing needed. it was really gross though. haha.

We have one, but since it's new we just clean spills as they happen---we finally got a new stove last year (the one that came with the house was original equipment from 1973 and it was on it's last burner!).

The one that came with our house is self cleaning! I had no idea what that meant, but I didn't feel like scraping out the bottom so I gave it a try. It takes FOREVER. I can't remember exactly how long, but it is hours. It basically gets super hot and burns away everything. The oven also locks itself, so you can't open it while it's super hot. This was problematic, because I didn't know how long it was going to take when I started it, then I realized I need to use it for dinner. So I turned the self cleaner off, but it took a long time to cool down after and I was still locked out of using it until it reached whatever temperature it needs to reach to unlock. :-/

Even after it "self cleans" you have to scrape out the stuff that turns to dust in there. It also runs VERY VERY HOT and will heat up your whole apartment.
