So I'm not pregnant. I was sad about it yesterday but today I'm just appalled at the fact that I am a grown woman who is incapable of not getting menstrual blood all over the bedsheets.

It's worse now that I'm married and share a bed with Adam and sometimes Liam.

Though I guess Liam wets the bed sometimes so we're even.

Seriously, is there some sort of Womanly Lesson my mother forgot to teach me? Not even maternity pads can save me on the first day. :(

Not sure if you have them where you are but Always Infinity saved me from that. Mine was because I had other issues that was making me bleed heavier than what is normal though. Have you spoken with your Gyno or is this not something new?

I use a menstrual cup and put it in when I think my period is about to start. But I don't bleed heavily anyway, and I'm fairly regular.

If it's feasible at all for you, I do recommend menstrual cups. So much cheaper than pads or tampons, and less waste...

That never happened to me before I had Max. My periods are so much heavier now, wtf.

I'm lucky that I almost never start overnight, but the first day I need to do a tampon/overnight pad combo so I don't bleed through everything.

I wear a pair of my husband's shorts to bed the first few days, so I get those dirty instead of the sheets. It's not just you dude.. I don't feel comfortable wearing a tampon at night, so the gravity works against you on those heavy nights.

I use tampons.. and it is that first night that is usually heaviest, but I haven't bled through underwear to sheets since I was a teen and used pads. (If I started to have that problem, I would probably start using the heavier tampons that first night or double up with both pad and tampon like previous commenter does)

I am a cup user and luckily I get a couple of days of light spotting before my period hits properly... And then I sleep on a folded up towel for the next four or five nights. When I was still at home we had a few old towels that were designated "period towels" - the ones mum, sister and I would sleep on so we didn't have to change the sheets every night!

I must be foul bachelorette frog because I always take a disgusting kind of pride in how much blood I can produce.

That said, I used to wear shorts or track pants to bed. That was a nice solution, and I figure towels would work too.

Or special black sheets. ;)

I sleep on a multi-layered absorbent cotton thing (almost quilted-like?). If you don't like being so "obvious", designated Red Sheet Week? :P

Well I'm normally on the pill, which gives me light periods. And I tend to skip the sugar pills, so I only had a period once every three months or so.

I'm pretty sure mine's normal, I just sort of fail at not having it leak out the sides, or up the back or whatever, when I'm sleeping.

Well, I don't plan on being not-on-the-pill for very long, it's just because I'm trying to conceive. When I'm on the pill my period is lighter :)

I might look into the cup though. Does it not leak at all?

Yeah, my periods are much more regular now. As in, they have a standard deviation of only 4 or so days, instead of just... whenever.

I thought you weren't allowed to sleep with a tampon :\

I can't use tampons anyway - I can't stick them up far enough, I have the shortest fingers known to mankind.

I wear granny panties, and then pants as well, but I will still soak through to the sheet :(

I didn't know you could use a tampon over night :\ I fail at tampons anyhow as I can't seem to stick them up far enough due to short fingers.

See, I like the towel idea, except 1. the towel never stays put for me, *and* it gets unbearably hot :(

I like the period towel idea a lot. I might try and find a lightweight alternative.

I bleed through the pants onto the sheets, through the sheets onto the mattress. I have an unsightly stain on my 5000 dollar mattress :(

Haha obviousness does't matter when you're married or had a baby in front of someone :p

I like that idea because the towel gets so hot for me!

Don't feel bad. I usually sleep with my middle wrapped up in a towel to avoid it. :)

There's a lot of info over at

menstrual_cups, which is how I did most of my research before I invested. But basically: it takes a little while to get used to it, but once you've found the right cup + have figured out how to insert it, I find there is a lot less leakage than on tampons or or pads. There's definitely a learning curve, but the cup has made my periods so much simpler. If my period is heavy and I'm worried, I use a pantyliner as a "just in case," but often I don't actually need it.

I also find it helpful because that means that I'm almost never caught without something in case of sudden period -- I just always carry the cup in my purse, and I can't "run out" in the middle of a period.

Anyway, I know it's not perfect for everybody, but I find all the positives to completely outweigh the few drawbacks.

I still get menstrual blood over the bedsheets sometimes sooo....

No, you can. You're not meant to have them in longer than 8 hours, but seriously, I have a 10 month old, when am I getting more than 8 hours sleep?

Oh man. :( I've done that too, but it wasn't a $5000 mattress. :(
